How to Perform Well at Work

Updated: October 20th, 2021

Congratulations, you got the desired job and started working in Canada. Now the biggest challenge is keeping it, while making sure that you are enjoying the work and benefiting in return. You don’t need to stay forever in job, but follow these tips and it will make your 9-5 day a little easier.

1. Work Hard

This may seem obvious, but many employees spend half of their day on social media and get easily distracted. Everybody needs a break sometimes, but be careful to keep your mind on your assigned work. This is especially true if your company needs to lay off some employees, as they always choose to let the laziest of the bunch go first.

2. Time management

Don’t be the last person through the door in the mornings, and the first out the door when the clock strikes 5pm. Dedication to the job and finishing your tasks is essential, which means that if you need to spend some extra time on a task after work, you should be around to do exactly that.

This always means that you shouldn’t take too many sick days in a row or plan long holidays away from work.

3. Work as a team

Working as a team and learning to handle different personalities and situations is essential. You will also need to be able to contribute fairly, without leaving one member working alone and struggling to get any input from the rest of the team.

4. Be positive

Nothing can bring the atmosphere of a work environment down faster than gossip and hateful comments about the work place. This negativity can often do more damage to a team than anything else. So even when it feels like you are drowning, always try to see the positive side of the situation.

5. Offer to help

If you have the opportunity to get involved in more projects, while learning new skills and developing your abilities, then you should try and take it. That does not mean that you should create more stress for yourself, but extra responsibility can create a favorable impression in the eyes of your employer.

6. Learn from your mistakes

Nobody’s perfect, so when you make a mistake, apologize and admit to it, before working on rectifying the issue. In the future, you should be able to take what you learnt from the experience and put it into practice.

7. Continuous education

Just because you have the job, doesn’t mean that learning and discovering is over. There are always new developments, new ways of improving processes and opportunities to better yourself. Stay up to date on the latest movements in your industry and you will always be ready to tackle any project.

This does not necessarily mean that you need to spend money on taking extra courses. There are many online resources that can help you for free.

Keeping your job is not a difficult task when you follow these steps. Even if this is not a career that you want to stay in for too long, always remember that every experience provides a step towards the job that you have always envisioned.
