When you live in Canada as a permanent resident and you reside in the Canadian province of Alberta, you are eligible to apply for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP).

What does the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) cover?

Some procedures are not covered by the AHCIP, like cosmetic surgery. Although in some cases whereby a cosmetic surgery is deemed medically necessary by a physician, it can be covered. For example, a panniculectomy (tummy tuck) or a breast reduction. Other procedures that are covered include:

• Vasectomy;
• Bariatric surgery for extreme obese patients;
• Visits to a psychiatrist;
• Examinations;
• Medically required surgery;
• Standard Ward Hospitalization;
• Use of radiotherapy facilities;
• Specific dental, oral and maxillofacial surgical services; and

How to register for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) coverage?

You can download the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) coverage form online and complete it or you can collect the form at a registry agent office.

After completing the form, you can either mail your completed application with the necessary documents to Alberta Health or take it to an authorized registry agent yourself, along with supporting documents.

What documents do you need to apply for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) coverage?

If you live in Canada as a permanent resident, you must show proof of your permanent resident card. The document must showcase your ID and birth date. Secondly, you must show proof of your Alberta residency- (utility bills for an Alberta residence, Alberta driver’s license or a bank statement). Finally, you need government issued photo identification.

How do you cover your dependents under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP)?

• If you are married, you and your spouse must register together.
• Children under 21 are registered as dependants
• If you are not married and live in Canada with an interdependent partner of more than three years, you may register together.
• If you are a student between the ages of 21-25, you may be eligible for coverage under your parents or foster parents’ plan.
• If you are above 21 years of age and not a student, you must set up your own AHCIP account.
