Flights to Canada

Updated: July 14th, 2021

So you know which immigration pathway is best for you and you’ve already chosen the city you would like to live in. Now your next thing to do is research flights to Canada. This is a very important step as you can save on costs when travelling to Canada.

It’s always a great idea to look for any special airlines might be having, using your saved miles or saving money by flying a non-direct flight. You can save quite a bit by taking a flight that has one or more stops before your final destinations.6 Ways to Save Money on Airfare

1. Use an Incognito Browser or VPN

Every time you search for the price of a particular flight, the flight booking sites use cookies to remember your searches. This will increase the prices every time you search for it. Meaning that if you go on the site five times in a single day, the price would have increased five times.

By using a VPN, it’ll make it seem as if you’re browsing from somewhere other than where you are. This could result in a more affordable price. You can even change your VPN to a different country and see if you get a better price.

2. Try Flying Alternate Routes

You will save a bit of money by simply taking a different route instead of the direct route. Having a layover in a different country or city from your departure location can be good for your pockets. Yes, it might take a little longer than the direct flight but at the end of your trip, you’ll still have landed in Canada. The only difference is you now have extra money.

3. Check if Baggage is Included

This may seem like a small cost but it can add to your flight cost significantly. And many times people don’t know about the extra baggage costs until it’s too late and they’re at the airport.

Paying extra baggage in advance can usually save you more money than paying at the airport, it depends on the airline you’re using.

4. Buy the Ticket Midweek

Certain days of the week, airlines will release their sales. This generally happens on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, of course, it depends on the airline. Try booking on a day where the departure dates fall between Tuesday and Thursday, they tend to cost less.

5. Choose a Different Airport

Some airports can be more affordable in terms of flight costs than others, even though they are a drive apart. So it’s always a smart idea to do some research and see if the neighbouring airport of your final destination is cheaper. Even with renting a car and using a little more of your time, the money you save can be well worth it.

6. Buy Your Tickets Seperately

Sometimes buying a round trip isn’t always the best option. Separating your flight could save you some money. It might be more work especially if you are booking tickets for a family but when you book one ticket at a time you could get a lower fare.

In the case you have young children with you, perhaps try booking one parent with the child and the second parent separately.

Now that the world is in the midst of a pandemic, a lot has changed in terms of the way travel is done. There are certain rules and regulations that need to be followed when travelling to Canada by air or land.

Getting Tested to Enter Canada

Any traveller flying into Canada from another country, regardless of citizenship, must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result. This applies to anyone five years of age or older. Those who are vaccinated still need to provide a negative COVID-19 test result as well.

Travellers coming into Canada need to:

  • take the test within 72 hours of the scheduled departure time of your flight to Canada
  • provide one of the accepted types of tests, not an antigen test
  • keep proof of your test results for the 14-day period that begins on the day you enter Canada

There are very few people who are exempt from pre-entry testing. However, there are a few cases including children who are four and younger, passengers who are transiting through Canada to reach another country and emergency services.

Does Canada Have Travel Restrictions?

The updated Canada travel restrictions state that travellers will need to take a COVID-19 molecular test on their arrival as well. The Government has set up 16 testing sites at the points of entry across Canada. Again, travellers will need to take the test close to the end of their 14-day quarantine.

Travellers arriving by air, as of February 22, 2021

  1. Travellers need to take a COVID-19 test before leaving the airport, as well as close to the end of their 14-day quarantine.
  2. In most cases, travellers need to book a three-night stay to wait for test results. It’s important to remember this needs to be done before arriving in Canada and will be at your own cost.
  3. The hotel you book has to be in the same city as the one you arrive in. In the case of having a connecting flight, you are only able to proceed once you receive a negative test result.

Travellers arriving by land need to submit their quarantine plan along with their contact and travel information. This needs to be done electronically via ArriveCAN before boarding your flight or crossing the border.

What Is ArriveCAN?

ArriveCan is an online application used by travellers to submit all contact information, documents and information related to travel plans. The uploading process is user-friendly and all your information is secure. The ArriveCan is an attempt by the government to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

This application needs to be used by all travellers when entering airports or crossing the borders of Canada.

To access ArriveCAN you can log in to the website and create an account or download the mobile app available. This app has been updated so it’s crucial to re-install the app if you’ve downloaded it before February 22, 2021.

What Can I Do on ArriveCan?

You can upload information on behalf of a traveller if they can’t do it themselves, perhaps a young child or an elderly. You will need to email the receipt to the actual traveller. You can also upload the reservation of the hotel you’re using for quarantine.

Once you arrive in Canada, you can confirm this via the app and begin your daily symptom reporting. You can use one ArriveCAN account to report the daily symptoms of up to eight family members. This is only allowed for those staying in quarantine together.

Having the app simplifies the entire process and makes quarantine a little easier. Without the app, you would need to call via phone to do your daily reporting during your quarantine period.

Why Move to Canada?

Even in the midst of a pandemic, Canada is still inviting foreigners to become Canadian permanent residents. The goal is to welcome over 1.2 million immigrants by the year 2023. Canada's economy is considered one of the largest in the world and is constantly growing at a time where many countries are struggling.

Now is the time to take a flight to Canada, and be part of the ever-growing economy. Whether it be as a skilled worker, international student or a business investor.
